Drug Name - Nexium (Esomeprazole)

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is helpful in prevention of excess production of stomach acids.

Indications for Use

Nexium is indicated for use in patients suffering from GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) with a history of persistent inflammation and irritation of the esophagus where in the patient has trouble taking medication orally. It can also be prescribed for other conditions as seen fit by the physician.

Instructions for Use

Nexium is taken as per the instructions provided by the doctor who prescribed it. Food has no bearing on the absorption of the drug. It is essential to take the drug at the same scheduled time each day.

If You Miss a Dose

In case you forget to take a dose, consume it as once you recollect that you missed a dose. In case the time when you remember is close to the next scheduled dose, avoid taking the dose you have missed and take the tablet only at the next scheduled time. Do not compensate for the missed dose by taking extra dose of medicine.

Storing Instructions

The drug is best stored at room temperature between 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Avoid direct contact with moisture or sunlight. Avoid storing Nexium where children and pets can reach the drug.

Safety Information

Avoid using Nexium under the following conditions:

• If you are allergic to any constituents in Nexium or other proton pump inhibitors.
• If you are currently on any medication such as HIV protease inhibitors like atazanavir.

Caution:

• Avoid driving or any other risky activities until you know the effects of the drug and its influence on these activities as Nexium has the possibility of inducing drowsiness or dizziness. These effects might be even higher if you are on alcohol or taking some other medicines.
• Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer like tarry stools or are vomiting what appears like coffee grounds; or if you begin to have any chest pain, inability to swallow, severe throat or stomach pain.
• Nexium has the possibility of causing interference to some laboratory tests. So ensure that you inform that you are on the drug if you are getting any lab tests done.
• Nexium has the high risk of side effects in patients of Asian origin. So care and caution must be used if prescribed to these patients.
• Nexium is used in children with extreme caution as their safety and efficiency have not been established.
• If you are currently taking Nexium and have got pregnant, inform your doctor and discuss about the risksy and advantages of Nexium during pregnancy. The presence of Nexium in breast milk is not known. It is best to avoid Nexium if you are a nursing mother.

Probable Adverse Effects

Seek medical attention if you are suffering from any of the serious side effects such as allergic reactions, unusual tiredness, chest pain, unusual bruises or bleeding, irregularities of the heart, redness or peeling of skin, sore throat, fevers or chills.

Also be sure to inform your doctor if you are suffering from some of the common side effects such as constipation, stomach ache, diarrhea, redness at the area of injection, pain or swelling of the site, headache, drying of the mouth, nausea or excess gas.

Nexium should only be taken by the person to whom it was recommended. Avoid sharing the drug with anyone. If the symptoms that you are experiencing are not improving or is going still worse, it is best to consult the doctor.
